Heart failure is a condition where the heart can’t pump blood as effectively as it should. This can lead to symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling in the legs and ankles. It’s caused by various factors, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or damage from a heart attack. While heart failure is a serious condition, treatments and lifestyle changes can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

The Heart Failure Hub Scotland is a collaborative initiative focused on improving the care and treatment of patients with heart failure across Scotland. Established in 2014, its objectives include enhancing patient outcomes through research, education, and the implementation of best practices in clinical care.
The Hub facilitates the sharing of resources and expertise among healthcare professionals and organisations. It promotes innovative approaches to managing heart failure, such as remote monitoring and personalised treatment plans with a focus on a national approach to pathways of care. Additionally, it aims to raise public awareness about heart failure and provide support for patients and their families.
The Heart Failure Hub is a subgroup of the Scottish Governments Heart Disease Task Force. Dr Alan Japp and Leeanne Macklin lead the strategic mission of the Hub and co-ordinate the workstreams.
